We are a school in New Delhi, India that serves 130 boys and girls who live in slums (townships) and governmental shelters. Our school prepares these children for public education, and does so by offering them a place where they can study, practise dance and yoga, learn English and Spanish, as well as receive two nutritious meals a day and have a safe place to play and rest. In addition to serving in this way, we’re also a nexus which connects members of this marginalized community to the services which the state makes available, but which are very difficult for our population to access—namely, public and semi-private hospitals, so that every medical issue can be treated and preventable fatalities can be avoided. Not only do we serve our students, but we serve their families as well; our mission is for each child to have a better life and this includes more than the four hours a day they spend at Motia Khan School.
